About the Club

How do I join?
Come and visit our stall in the sports hall on Saturday 13th October. There should be members in racesuits wandering round all day, so keep an eye out.

You will need the following to join:

£5: This will buy you club membership for the year. Bear in mind that all sessions we run are subsidised, and we get you there and back for nothing - it's a great deal for some great karting!

£15: This will buy you club membership for the year and pay for your first freshers karting session at Monks Cross in either Week 2 or Week 3. This is a great offer, since it would usually be £15 by itself outside of the YUKC!

AU Membership: The club is part of the Athletic Union and, as such, you must be a member to come on any trips.

Note: You can only join the AU online this year. Head to http://www.yusu.org/au/buyaumembership.html to do so. You MUST be an AU member before you can join the Karting Club.
What we offer members
  • For the 'casual' driver, or first timer:
    • Subsidised go-kart driving at many different tracks
    • Free transportation to and from all events
    • A non-competitive atmosphere - if you wish...
  • For those wishing to do more:
    • Time logging - to see who's the fastest over a single lap
    • A Racing League for competitive racing
    • The chance to enter the British Universities Karting Championship
    • And obviously the discounts and free transport!
What do we drive?
Monks Cross, Leeds: single 200cc 4-stroke. These will do around 30mph, and as the circuits are quite tight it can seem daunting at first!
Hull: single 200cc 4-stroke. Despite being the same as the indoor karts, they are tuned to a higher top speed; nearer 40 mph - and with a large track and many fast corners it's perfect for the first time outdoors.
Langbaurgh: twin 200cc 4-stroke. These will get you up to 60-70 mph round the long outdoor circuit, but are quite a bit heavier.
British Universities Karting Championships: Club100 provide a fleet of 100cc 2-stroke engined karts. These are the daddies, really light, doing 5-60mph in under 4 seconds, and maxing out at around 80mph. However, with no clutch, a simple spin can mean a stall.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of karts we drive.

Indoor
Monks Cross35 laps practice, around 15 minutes£15
Outdoor
Hull30 minutes practice£20
LangbaurghIron Man (total 60 minutes)£35

Prices are subject to change, depending on our financial situation. However we will always subsidise in some way, and we guarantee free transport.
A brief history...
The club was founded in 1998 by Ed Day, with no support for the first year. Now heading into its tenth year, even though it's still a relatively new club, it has attracted many members, building on the success of previous years.

The early years of the club involved taxis to the local track at Monks Cross most weeks; anything further away was a real treat! With more funding we can now afford to hire minibuses and venture further afield more regularly.

In the club's second year we entered the Inter-University Karting Championship (since renamed British Universities Karting Championship) for the first time, and came a respectable 15th of 27. 2001 saw another attempt at the Championship, and a well deserved 7th was the result of many hours of Minibus driving. 2002 and 2003 saw the A team pick up the "Rookie Team of the Year" award, open to those teams with less karting experience - a fantastic achievement. In 2005 the A team went one better: Carl Watt and Rui Maia won one of the 'Wingman' races at Clay Pigeon, the first victory of its kind for York in the BUKC. 2006 saw Carl again setting a club first, winning a 'Team Sprint' 25 minute race on his own.

We have successfully run several Racing Leagues through the club's short history, and the IronMan event has become a firm favourite. This year will hopefully see more action and great racing!
